Parents take upon themselves the shocks of the world so that their children may be spared all unhappiness.
Shabana (Leena Chandavarkar), though she does not know it, is the daughter of a woman who through force of circumstances, was compelled to take to the profession of a dancing-girl. One day, told that her daughter is to be confronted with the truth, the woman commits suicide. Life now tries to ruin the daughter’s also.
But Shabana has a faithful attendant. With this old woman, she flees, and they find shelter in Lucknow, in the house of a good friend. His name is Nawab Moo Bole (Farooq) a comic-type of a poet, who has a college friend named Yusuf (Rajesh Khanna).
Yusuf falls in love with Shabana and their marriage seems to be headed for smooth sailing. But there are many storm-clouds gathering.
Who is that strange old man (Pradeep Kumar) for instance, whom Shabana had befriended on the train journey? Why does he come at dead of night to murder Yusuf? What grudge has he towards Yusuf’s father (Iftekhar)? And what is that strange bond of affection which grows between Shabana and this mysterious old man?
Then again, on the eve of the wedding of Shabana with Yusuf, the evil man who had ruined Shabana’s mother’s life, enters her life too, threatening to expose her past. Even as the wedding is about to be solemnized. The evil man is shot.
Who killed him? Why did the old man proclaim himself a murderer in the court? How did Yusuf learn the truth behind all these mysteries, and came to narrate the whole story in the court?
To learn the answers to these questions and to find out what happens to the love of Shabana and Yusuf, you will have to see H. S Rawail’s MEHBOOB KI MEHNDI’ from the very beginning to the very end.
